All the work of carpeting the nave of York Minster with Wow!Grass! , fitting it intricately around each pillar and working with the Minster staff and contract electricians laying miles of cables, finally came to fruition on the Friday evening 8th June. 900 people arrived for the major fund raising dinner to be greeted by a sight they surely never expected to see – tables set out on a sea of green, smelling of fresh grass and soft to walk on.
An excellent dinner was accompanied by wondrous entertainment with trapeze artists swing from the lofty heights above the nave – slightly incongruous with the religious setting you might think – but everyone was there to help raise the huge sums of money required to keep this magnificent place of worship in place for another 1000 years.
The Wow!Grass was the talking point , but interestingly, one of the major features was the way that the grass deadened the acoustic, allowing people to talk normally across the table, rather than shouting as the sound usually reverberates around the stone surrounds.
The press interest was intense with enquiries and plaudits coming in from across the world. Wow!Grass! certainly created the wow effect by placing grass where nobody expects to see it, and we were happy to have contributed to the appeal in a rather unusual way.
Not quite so pleasurable was the task for our hardworking team who started at 12.30 am to remove the grass carpet and load it up in torrential rain outside the great West Door. Well done for the great effort of everyone involved.
