Lincoln Castle

Lincoln CastleIn a turfing ‘first’, Lindum used its own patented Lindum Grassfelt to cover the extremely steep slope of Lucy Tower Motte at 11th century Lincoln Castle.

Lindum Managing Director Stephen Fell said, “Turfing Lucy Tower Motte presented Lincoln Castle with an enormous challenge as it is an incredibly steep slope to turf. In what could be described as ‘extreme turfing’, we supplied them with Lindum Grassfelt, which not only looks fantastic and is low maintenance, but will importantly stabilise and protect the Motte from soil erosion.”

Simpson Contractors of Louth were responsible for preparing the land and laying the turf. Before turfing could begin, 25 tonnes of dangerous trees and scrub had to be cut down from the steep slope. To ensure stability, very large stumps were cut sheer to the ground and left to slowly rot down. Rather than covering these stumps with the turf, the turf has been cut around them, creating a striking sculptural effect.

Mary Powell, Programme Coordinator for the Historic Lincoln Projects at Lincolnshire County Council said, “Lindum Grassfelt turf is an extraordinary product and it solved the problem of how to manage this difficult steep site at Lincoln Castle. Not only does it protect the steep bank and cut down on maintenance but it looks so beautiful too! Response from the public has been very positive and nobody can quite believe how well it’s worked.”
