A survey of 2000 people found UK gardeners spend an average of 35 minutes a week cutting the grass and burning 600 calories a month in the process.
According to CalorieLab, a calorie calculator, cutting the grass was revealed to be the top fat-busting garden activity, burning 5.7 calories per metre.
So as the obesity crisis threatens to overwhelm the country, what better solution than to get out there with your mower.
Gardening is not only a very therapeutic activity, but is a healthy one as the study found that the average British gardener burns 51,428 calories a year through gardening activities.
Added to that, walking on grass barefoot has been shown to reduce heart rate and stress levels, and whilst not advocating mowing in that state of undress, it all adds up to the lawn being an essential part of healthy and stress free living.
So go on – pull up that decking and lay some turf. You and your family will feel so much better for it!
