Creating a Low Maintenance Flower Bed with Wildflower Turf
Creating a Low Maintenance Flower Bed with Wildflower Turf
Wildflower turf is versatile and can be utilised in a wide range of scenarios, whether it be for a large area or to simply fill a small patch in your garden. Growing a wildflower area from seed is known to be challenging, regardless of its size. By opting for wildflower turf, the laborious task of establishing the area is already completed, allowing for immediate environmental benefits and the attraction of local pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Benefits of wildflower turf
Pollinators are experiencing a decline due to habitat destruction, but your garden has the power to make a positive impact. By establishing a diverse pollinator garden, you can play a vital role in supporting this essential component of the food chain and contribute to the enhancement of our pollinator population. An effective method to achieve this is through the use of wildflower turf, which features a variety of native wildflowers. This straightforward and immediate solution not only brings vibrant colours to your garden throughout the year but also introduces pollinator-friendly species that benefit local wildlife. Our turf is exclusively composed of perennials, ensuring low maintenance and the return of flowers year after year, eliminating the need for replanting.
Planning Your Flower Bed
When choosing the location for your flower bed, it is essential to consider the growing conditions. Ensure that the turf receives adequate sunlight, which can include dappled shade, and that the area does not experience standing water regularly.
Properly preparing the ground is a crucial step in establishing the bed. It is important to remove any existing turf and large stones or rocks to allow the wildflowers to establish their roots and thrive. Unlike traditional lawn turf, there is no need to overturn the soil; simply rake the top layer and level it out, as wildflowers thrive in soil with lower nutrient levels
Installing Wildflower Turf
With your area prepared, you are now ready to lay your wildflower turf. Our wildflower turf is harvested in slabs, making it convenient to lay out. Simply place the wildflower turf on top of your prepared ground and cut it into the desired shape and size using a sharp Stanley blade. As our turf is plastic-free, this can be easily achieved. Ensure to butt together the slabs as you progress and refrain from walking on them. Once the area is covered, thoroughly water it and continue to do so daily until the roots have established, typically within 4-6 weeks depending on the season.
Maintaining Your Flower Bed
Wildflower turf requires minimal maintenance once the area is established, typically necessitating only 1-2 cuts per year. A good indication that it's time to trim back the turf is when seed heads begin to appear, usually towards the end of Spring and Autumn. Using shears or a strimmer, trim the turf to a height of around 2-3 inches. This practice allows the seed heads to disperse back onto the ground, facilitating regeneration and eliminating the need for replanting. It is crucial to clear away all clippings to ensure that new seeds and plants receive ample sunlight and to prevent rotting.
